Getting ready for a big road trip with your furry friend? Traveling with a dog can be challenging if you’re not prepared. Here are a few tips for traveling with Goldendoodles!
Make a packing list
Write out a list of things that your Goldendoodle needs during your road trip as well as after you arrive at your destination. This will help make sure that you don’t forget to pack anything.
- Food and water
- Bowls for food and water
- Chew toys
- Leash
- Identification tags
- Medications
- Etc.
Practice, practice, practice
Traveling with Goldendoodles can be easier than traveling with other dogs, especially considering the fact that they don’t shed! Of course, you still need to teach your dog how to travel in a vehicle.
- Make sure your dog can sit, lay down, and stay while in a car.
- Travel short distances in the car and gradually increase the length of each trip until your Goldendoodle is comfortable in a car.
- It’s crucial that your Goldendoodle knows to stay when you open the door. This will keep her safe in new, unfamiliar areas, and areas with lots of traffic.
Practice with your Goldendoodle and work your way up to longer road trips.
Wear your Goldendoodle out!
Make sure that your Goldendoodle gets plenty of exercise the day before – and the morning of – your road trip. Traveling with Goldendoodles, or any type of dog for that matter, goes much smoother when they’re exhausted.
Goldendoodles love to play and run around, however, and even people get restless on a long drive. Be prepared to stop for exercise breaks!
Traveling on an empty stomach
Some dogs get sick when traveling a vehicle. One way that you can help avoid carsickness is limiting the amount that your dog eats before a road trip.
For short trips, consider letting your Goldendoodle travel on an empty stomach. This isn’t an option for long road trips, however.
It’s a good idea to bring rubber gloves, fabric cleaner, paper towels, and extra trash bags just in case your dog gets sick while in the car.
Plan on stopping
The longer the road trip, the more likely that you will need to stop to let your Goldendoodle exercise and go to the bathroom. Make sure that you plan enough time for frequent stops when traveling with Goldendoodles!
