Goldendoodles can weigh anywhere between 25 and 75 pounds! Why is there such a large range for Goldendoodle size? How big are Goldendoodles anyway? Goldendoodle size varies depending on the type of Goldendoodle you have. This means that a healthy weight for one Goldendoodle might no be the same for another. Here’s a look at the different types of Goldendoodle along with some tips to keep your Goldendoodle at a healthy weight.
How big is a Goldendoodle?
Platinum Goldies raises three different types of Goldendoodle.
- Standard Goldendoodles weigh between 50 and 75 pounds. Some grow to be even larger! Our Standard Goldendoodle puppies typically grow to 50-60 pounds at maturity.
- Medium Goldendoodles tend to cap between 40 and 50 pounds.
- Mini Goldendoodles are the smallest Goldendoodle, and they weigh between 25 and 35 pounds at maturity.
Since Goldendoodles are a designer dog breed, there’s no golden number for how much they should weigh. Generally speaking dogs at a healthy weight do not show their ribs, but their ribs can be felt without applying much pressure. Look for an hourglass figure between the ribs, waistline, and hips. Also, your dogs tummy should tuck in rather than bulge outward.
If you’re unsure about whether or not your dog is overweight, underweight, or at a healthy weight, talk to your dog’s vet.
Ways to maintain a healthy weight for a Goldendoodle
Keeping your Goldendoodle at a healthy weight will help him stay in good health and enjoy a good quality of life. A clinical study found that dogs kept at a healthy weight lived almost 2 years longer than overweight dogs. Fortunately, keeping your pet at a healthy weight is pretty straightforward.
Choose healthy dog food.
Most brand name dog food will do just fine for your Goldendoodle. You don’t necessarily have to spring for expensive artisan, small batch, or organic dog foods, and you don’t have make your own dog food from whole ingredients (although your Goldendoodle will certainly love you for it!).
The key is steering clear of unhealthy people food. You don’t want to feed your dog bacon every morning or pour bacon grease on his dry kibble. Keep the burgers and bratwurst out of the doggie bowl. Donuts aren’t good for you and they certainly aren’t good for your dog.
Control portion sizes.
Some dogs can self-feed and regulate the amount of food that they eat based on hunger. This doesn’t work for all dogs, however. If your dog eats as long as there is food in his bowl, you need to be mindful about portion size. Most dog foods list recommended portion sizes based on the weight of your dog.
Keep active.
Exercise is crucial for your dog’s physical and mental health, and it can help your Goldendoodle stay at a healthy weight. Take your Goldendoodle for a walk, a hike, a run, or find other ways to keep your dog active every day!
