What Do You Get With a Goldendoodle?

You can expect most Goldendoodles and Goldendoodle puppies to be intelligent, friendly, fun-loving, and loyal dogs. You may have heard that Goldendoodle traits are unpredictable, however. Many dog breeds are known for, and tend to show, certain characteristics, but there’s no guarantee that any dog will possess specific qualities.

Nature vs. nurture

While different dog breeds are known for exhibiting certain traits and characteristics, lineage alone won’t determine how your dog behaves.

The way that you care for and raise a puppy plays a big role in how they behave when they are older. Things like training, socialization, and exposure to new places and settings all factor into how friendly, responsive, and obedient your dog will be.

For example, even a naturally friendly dog might bark or be suspicious of strangers if she never gets to be around new people.

While it’s true that dogs are bred to possess certain traits, it’s still up to the owner to nurture those traits.

Can you really know what you’re going to get?

A dog’s physical traits are more predictable than temperament and personality, and unlike a dog’s behavior a dog’s phenotype is beyond the owner’s influence. Even physical traits aren’t always guaranteed, however.

The physical characteristics of purebred dog breeds are fairly predictable within a certain range, but there’s still a fair amount of variation. Dogs from the same litter vary in color, size, weight, and markings.

Predicting things like weight and coat type can be more difficult with designer dog breeds like Goldendoodles. Breeding across different breeds presents more opportunity for variation.

However, experienced Goldendoodle breeders who use the same sires and dams tend to see consistent traits throughout their Goldendoodle puppy litters. This is especially true of first generation backcross Goldendoodles.

F1b Goldendoodles are more predictable

The F1b Goldendoodle — or first generation backcross — is a Goldendoodle puppy that has a first generation Goldendoodle parent and a Poodle parent. A first generation Goldendoodle has one Poodle parent and one Golden Retriever parent.

Goldendoodle traits tend to be more predictable with an F1b Goldendoodle puppy. For, example F1b Goldendoodle puppies tend to have the low-shedding or non-shedding coats associated with Poodles.

While first generation backcross Goldendoodle puppies provide more consistent traits, all Goldendoodles make wonderful pets. Platinum Goldies offers F1 Goldendoodles and F1b Goldendoodles.
