Water and Hiking With Your Goldendoodle

Hiking is a great way to get active and enjoy the great outdoors with your dog, and autumn is the perfect time to hit the trail. Goldendoodles love to run and play, and they are ideal pets for active families. You should always pack plenty of water for yourself and your dog any time you go hiking with your Goldendoodle – even if you’re hiking near water.

People sometimes assume that it’s safe for dogs to drink from rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, and other natural bodies of water. This isn’t always true, however.

Clear water isn’t always clean water

Crystal clear pools and moving water might seem safe to drink, but water that looks clean isn’t always potable, or drinkable. In fact, murky water can sometimes be safer than clear water.

Many of the contaminants that make water unsafe cannot be seen. Chemicals, heavy metals, bacteria, viruses, and parasites like Giardia and Cryptosporidium are imperceptible.

“Never drink untreated water” is one of the cardinal rules of outdoor recreation. Drinking contaminated water can make you very sick, which can be dangerous out in nature. This is true for people and dogs.

If you wouldn’t drink from it, don’t let your dog drink from it.

Most people who spend time a lot of time out in nature know not to drink water without filtering or purifying it first. As a good rule of thumb, don’t let your dog drink anything that you wouldn’t drink.

Sure, your dog might be fine, but it’s not worth the risk to your pet’s heath. You don’t know if that river, pond, or puddle is safe to drink from. You do, however, know that the water you brought from home is fresh, clean, and safe.

Always bring plenty of water while hiking with your Goldendoodleas well as a collapsible bowl or dish.
