Understanding the Different Doodle Dogs

What exactly does a Doodle dog look like? Well, they can weigh 15 pounds or 100 pounds. They can be a solid cream color, or multiple different colors with distinct markings. Also, they can have straight coats, or they can have tight curls. The truth is that there is a lot of variation when it comes to Doodles.

What is a Doodle?

A Doodle is any dog that is bred with a Poodle; this means several different dog breeds are included under the umbrella term of Doodle dogs. Bernese Mountain Dogs, Australian Shepherds, Golden Retrievers, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and many other types of dog are bred with Poodles to get Doodles.

Doodles are designer dogs; for this reason, there is a lot of variation in size and appearance of Doodle dogs.

What do Doodles dogs look like?

There are small Doodles that can weigh under 20 pounds, while large Doodles can weigh close to 100 pounds.

Doodle size depends on the parentage. For example, a Moyen Poodle bred with a small dog like a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel results in a small Doodle dog. A Standard Poodle bred with a Standard Bernese Mountain Dog results in a large dog.

Doodle color and markings also depend on parentage. Bernedoodles have the distinct markings of a Bernese Mountain Dog, while Goldendoodles can have solid coats or subtle markings.

Also, Goldendoodles don’t have to be golden in color; they can be apricot, red, chocolate, cream, silver, or black.

Even Doodles of the same breed look different

Of course, Cavapoos, Bernedoodles, Aussiedoodles, and Goldendoodles look different from one another. However, there’s also variation within each individual breed.

There is natural variation when you breed two different dog breeds together. Two Doodle puppies from the same litter can have different physical characteristics.

However, the most significant variation in traits come from different generations of Doodles. F1b, or first generation backcross, Doodles have the most predictable traits, while F2 (second generation) or multi-generational Doodles have the least predictable traits.

Consistencies with Doodle dogs

While the physical appearance of different Doodle dogs can vary, there are certain traits that are consistent with most Doodles. Doodles are intelligent and sociable dogs that are great for families and first-time dog owners. They are also adorable and most develop a low-shedding or non-shedding hypoallergenic coat.
