Tips to Keep Your Dog Active When It’s Cold Outside

Goldendoodles love to run and play, and dogs need exercise every day in order to stay happy and healthy. This is true at every stage in your dog’s life and at all times of the year. Of course, it’s much easier to get out and play with your Goldendoodle when the weather is pleasant. Staying physically active when it’s cold outside can be a real challenge, however. Here are a few tips to help you keep your dog active when it’s cold outside.

Bundle up

Goldendoodles never forget their jackets; they have lush and fluffy coats. You, on the other hand, have to dress for cold weather if you’re going to keep your dog active when it’s cold outside. Wear warmer clothing than you think you will need, and wear layers that you can take off if you get too warm.

You might be able to brace the cold for a couple of minutes, but don’t cut your pet’s playtime short because you were underdressed!

Play more!

Getting fresh air during the cold months is just as important for you as it is for your dog.  The average American spends 87% of their life indoors and another 6% in automobiles. We tend to spend even more time indoors during the winter. According to the EPA, the air quality indoors is 2 to 5 times worse than the air quality outdoors.

Get outside more often for shorter periods of time. You don’t have to knock out all of your play time in one go. According to the CDC, every 10 minutes that you’re active counts for your overall total of active minutes.

Keep moving

If you want to keep your dog active when it’s cold outside, choose activities that keep you and your Goldendoodle moving. Fetch will keep your pet warm, but you will get cold quickly just standing around.

Get your blood pumping and keep your body temperature up! Go for walks or hikes, or run around with your Goldendoodle.

Check the forecast

You still get some relatively pleasant weather – depending on where you live – even during the cold months. Make sure to watch the weather forecast, and take advantage of the warmer days.

Play indoors

Sometimes it really is too cold to take your pet outdoors for playtime. If it’s unbearably cold, you can always play indoors! Play tug of war, fetch with a plush toy, chase, etc.
