Goldendoodle grooming needs are typically pretty low. You can, of course, put a lot of time and effort into keeping your Goldendoodle’s coat looking lovey and luxurious, but their coats aren’t typically high maintenance. Here are a few things to keep in mind about Goldendoodle grooming.
Goldendoodle coats have a lot of variety
It can sometime be difficult to predict what a Goldendoodle puppy’s coat will look like. It’s possible for a single Goldendoodle litter to have puppies with wavy, curly, or even flat coats.
Because their coats can vary greatly, so can Goldendoodle grooming needs. Generally speaking, though, a Goldendoodle’s coat doesn’t require an excessive amount of time or attention. The more time you put into Goldendoodle grooming, the better your dog’s coat will look, but you can get by with the basics.
Always be sure to brush!
Most Goldendoodles shed very little. Many don’t shed at all. It’s still a good idea to brush your Goldendoodle on a regular basis. Brushing helps prevent tangles, knots, and matting, it removes dirt, loose fur, and dander, and keeps your Goldendoodle’s coat soft and clean!
If you notice matting that cannot be brushed out, you can cut the tangles out to prevent them from getting larger.
There’s a lot of debate over how often you should brush your Goldendoodle. Again, since there’s so much variety in the appearance of a Goldendoodle’s coat, there’s not a definitive answer. The more often you brush your Goldendoodle, however, the easier it is to manage his or her coat. Plus, Goldendoodles usually love being spoiled with brushing.
Bathe your Goldendoodle!
How often you bathe your Goldendoodle depends on a number of factors, but the length and texture of his coat is one of the most important.
A bath every 4 to 6 weeks should be enough to keep their fur clean and their skin healthy.
Always brush your Goldendoodle before giving him a bath. Bathing often makes any mats or tangles in your dog’s fur worse.
Keep your Goldendoodle trim!
Some people like their Goldendoodles to have a natural look while others prefer a a more styled coat.
Even if your Goldendoodle prefers to be au naturel, you may need to trim the hair between the toes and above eyes.
Toenails should be trimmed or filed as well. Frequent walks on paved surfaces can help keep your Goldendoodle’s nails trim.
Of course, many people prefer to leave grooming to the professionals. Since Goldendoodles are so friendly and good with people, this should be an easy, low-stress affair.
