The Key to Training a Puppy

What do you think the most important thing is when it comes to training a puppy? You might think of treats, an experienced trainer, or maybe some obedience classes. Maybe you think it depends on whether you’re teaching your dog a trick, housetraining a puppy, or training your dog to walk off the leash. No matter what kind of dog you have or what you want to train your dog to do, there’s something that you need before you start training a puppy: patience.

Why is patience so important?

Patience is the most important thing that you need when it comes to training a puppy. This is true even for puppies that are easy to train, such as Goldendoodle puppies.

Why?

Because all of those treats and dog training videos that you watch won’t help you teach your dog how to come on command or how to stop making messes in the house if you get angry and discouraged when your dog doesn’t do what you want him to do.

You, of course, need the right tools and the right knowledge to train a puppy, but these things are only valuable as long as you are able to put them to use.

Don’t get frustrated and give up. Don’t scold your dog. Make sure that you stay dedicated and patient. This is the only way that your dog will actually learn the behaviors that you want him to learn.

A puppy isn’t going to learn how to sit, stay, and heel overnight. Housetraining takes time, and even when it seems like he’s finally learned, your dog may have an occasional accident.

Be consistent in your training, pay close attention to your dog’s behavior, and remind yourself to be patient with your puppy.
