Steps to Give a Puppy As a Gift

Puppies make terrific gifts. A puppy is a gift that keeps on giving, and it gets better over time. However, adding a pet to your family is a big commitment and responsibility; it shouldn’t be done on a whim or without consideration.

Follow these steps for gifting a loved one a puppy.

Consider the cost and commitment

Everyone wants a puppy, but not everyone has the time or resources to actually raise a puppy. Think honestly and critically, and determine whether or not the person is ready for a puppy.

Ask the person first

Exclaiming, “I want to take all of the puppies in the world home with me!!!” is not the same thing as seriously stating, “After a lot of thought and contemplation, I am ready to get a dog, and I am prepared for all of the responsibilities involved with dog ownership.”

Millions of dogs go to animal shelters every year; about 1 out of 5 of these dogs are given up because their family did not have enough time for a pet.

Make sure that the person actually wants to add a member to their family before surprising them with a life that depends on them for survival.

If you want the puppy to be a surprise — and even if it’s not a surprise — you should ask someone else in the person’s household if they are ready to have a puppy in the family.

Find the perfect puppy

Once you’ve determined that the recipient is ready for a puppy, you get to find the perfect puppy! Goldendoodles are one of the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. right now, for several good reasons.

Make sure you know where your puppy is coming from — find a responsible breeder that is transparent with their practices.

Plan the presentation

There are lots of different ways to present a puppy as a gift. The puppy in a box (with air holes of course!) is a classic way to gift a puppy. Others prefer to release a happy, playful puppy into an unsuspecting room of people.

However you decide to do it, make sure you’ve planned through the logistics of gifting a puppy to make the moment perfect.

Remember the necessities

Your new puppy needs more than just your love and affection.  Maybe the experience of going shopping for food, dog bowls, a collar, and a leash with your new puppy is part of the gift.

If not, consider providing those things, or encourage someone else to gift those items instead.
