Small Things You Can Do To Keep Your Dog Healthy

Of course you need to give your dog food and water each day. You know you should take her for walks, and you know that you need to take your Doodle in for routine vet visits. These are the big, obvious things that you do to keep your dog healthy. However, there are lots of little things you can do to keep your dog happy and healthy that aren’t as obvious.

Keep your dog healthy with flea and tick medicine

This is especially important if you like to hike, camp, and take your dog outdoors, or if you live in a rural area around woods and tall grass.

Fleas and ticks can transfer disease and cause infections, and a medicine to prevent flea and tick bites is an easy way to protect your pet.

Clean out food and water bowls regularly

You always remember to give your Doodle food and water, but do you remember to clean out their bowls? Left unwashed, food and water bowls are a breeding ground for bacteria and potentially harmful microbes.

Your dog’s dishes don’t need to be pristine and clean after every meal, but you should get in the habit of washing them out at least once per week. Some vets recommend cleaning food and water bowls every day!

Brush, brush, brush your doodle

You might not think that brushing your dog’s fur could affect your dog’s health, but it really does.

Dedicated brushing time makes your dog feel loved, and it can be a relaxing and soothing experience when they get used to it. It’s bonding time for you and your pet.

Regular brushing also helps avoid stressful grooming sessions. Anyone who has let their Doodle go unbrushed for too long knows that it can take a pretty intense grooming session to get all of the mats out.

Brush your Doodle daily, at minimum weekly.

Make sure your dog eats a healthy diet

It’s not just about making sure your dog eats enough food each day. It’s the quality and nutritional value of the food. We recommend Royal Canin.

Limit the people food your dog eats

Feeding your dog from the dinner table, treating your dog to a scrap here and a morsel there makes it difficult to keep track of the extra calories your dog eats throughout the day.

Most dogs won’t turn down scraps of bacon or pizza crust even if they’ve already had all of their meals for the day. Over time, overeating can lead to overweight or obesity for your dog.

Some foods that are safe for humans aren’t always safe for dogs; they can cause digestive problems for your dog and they may be toxic.

Clean your dog’s ears

This is one of the easiest things to forget when it comes to keeping your dog healthy, but it makes a big difference. Ear infections are one of the most common reasons that dogs go to the vet, after vaccinations and spaying or neutering.

Occasionally cleaning your dog dog’s ears can help prevent ear infections.

Keep your dog healthy by making time for your pet

It’s important to set aside quality time with your dog. Life gets busy and it may be difficult to find time for everything you need to do in the day, but your dog is a member of the family.

Your dog may be alone for most of the day while the family is at work or school, and family time is the highlight of her day. Make a point to spend time playing with your dog and showing her love.
