The term “labradoodle” was first used in 1955 to describe a Labrador/poodle cross. In 1988, a retired veterinarian named Wally Conron had the idea of creating a guide dog for a blind woman who was allergic to dogs.
Conron crossed a Labrador retriever and a standard poodle to create a calm, intelligent guide dog for those allergic to fur and dander. The Labradoodle was born!
American breeders liked the combination and the labradoodle has grown in popularity ever since.

Like all doodle dogs, the texture and colors of labradoodle coats vary. A labradoodle coat texture might be wiry, wavy, tightly curled or soft like fleece. The color of the coat could be tan, gold, red, black, brown or brindled.
Most labradoodles have odorless, low to non-shedding coats, though some with strong Labrador genes do shed — but lightly and with less odor than Labradors.
Thanks to the best traits of poodles and Labradors, labradoodles are intelligent and easy to train, but also very social and loving. This makes them great family dogs as well as exceptional service dogs.
