F1 vs. F1b Doodles

Doodle dogs are one of the most popular types of dog in the United States right now: especially F1 and F1b Doodles. These affectionate and friendly dogs are easy to love, they are perfect for first-time dog owners, and they make great family pets.

You would never guess that beneath all those cute and cuddly curls, Doodle dogs are surprisingly complex, however. For instance, the term “Doodle” includes dozens of different dog breeds, and there’s a lot of variation among different generations of Doodle dogs.

Here’s a look at the difference between F1 and F1b Doodles, and which type of Doodle is right for you.

F1, or first generation, Doodles

F1 stands for first generation. A first generation Doodle has one Poodle parent and one non-Poodle (and non-Doodle) parent. Doodle dogs are a designer dog breed, and there are several different types of Doodle.

Here are a few examples.

  • Bernese Mountain Dog + Poodle = Bernedoodle
  • Golden Retriever + Poodle = Goldendoodle
  • Australian Shepherd + Poodle = Aussiedoodle
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel + Poodle = Cavoodle

F1 Doodles get roughly half of their genetic information from two different dog breeds; this means there is a level of uncertainty when it comes to predicting physical traits and characteristics.

F1b, or first generation backcross, Doodles

First generation backcross Doodles (F1b) result from an F1 Doodle that is bred with a Poodle. Because F1b Doodles have more genetic information from a single dog breed, it is easier to predict physical traits and characteristics.

For example, F1b Doodles are more likely to inherit a Poodle’s hypoallergenic non-shedding coat than other Doodle generations.

Any type of Doodle — Bernedoodle, Goldendoodle, Aussiedoodle, etc. — can be an F1b Doodle.

Why are these Doodle generations more popular?

F1 and F1b Doodles are the most popular Doodle generations because their traits are more predictable. F2 and multigenerational Doodles are still wonderful dogs, but the variation makes it difficult for breeders to get consistent results.
