Can Dogs Get Head Lice From People?

Families with young children have to be mindful about head lice. It doesn’t matter how tidy you keep your home or how well groomed your children are when they leave the house for school. School-age children are the most likely to get head lice and share it with others. This may have something to do with the fact that the older you get, the less socially acceptable it is to touch your friends’ hair and wear their hats.

Getting rid of head lice can be a long, tedious, and challenging process. You know that you’ll need to wash clothes and linens and do a thorough check through the family’s hair for head lice, but do you need to worry about your Goldendoodle? Can dogs get head lice from people?

Can dogs get head lice from people?

The head lice that infect humans are known as pediculus humanus capitis. These parasites are specific to people, and they can only feed on human blood.

This means that your Goldendoodle can’t get head lice if your child is unfortunate enough to bring them home.

Can head lice live on dogs?

OK, so maybe head lice can survive on your dog, but can they travel or hang out on your pets and then go back to a human host when the coast is clear?

No.

Head lice can’t feed on dogs or pets, so they aren’t drawn to them. Lice move by crawling around; they cannot jump or fly. They won’t seek refuge in your Goldendoodle’s luscious coat, wait until the head lice shampoo wears off, and then come back.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Dogs, cats, and other pets do not play a role in the transmission of human lice.”
