Some dogs love the water, and some dogs hate it. But when push comes to shove, any dog can paddle his way out of water, right? It’s a common misconception that all dogs can swim. In reality, some dogs are natural swimmers, and others aren’t. So where do Goldendoodles land? Are Goldendoodles good swimmers?
Swimming runs in the family
Golden Retreivers and Poodles are both natural swimmers, which means that Goldendoodles are naturally good swimmers, too! Goldendoodles are part Golden Retriever and part Poodle.
Poodles are very strong swimmers. In fact, they were bred for duck hunting and retrieving game from water. Golden Retrievers were also bred to retrieve fowl from the water, and they are still known to enjoy a good dip!
Plus, Goldendoodles are highyl trainable, which means you shouldn’t have any problems teaching your Goldendoodle to swim.
Before your Goldendoodle goes for a swim…
Goldendoodles may love water, but never assume that your dog knows how to swim. Even if your dog is a natural swimmer, you want to make sure that he’s comfortable around water, and you want a good sense of his ability before throwing him into the deep end.
Introduce your Goldendoodle to water in a safe and non-threatening way. Find a shallow pool and keep things fun. Regular bathing can help prime your Goldendoodle for swimming by teaching him that water is nothing to be afraid of.
Even if your Goldendoodle is a good swimmer, it’s highly recommended to always supervise your dog while swimming, and outfit him with a dog life jacket. Dogs don’t always think about how far out they swim, or the depth of water, the same way that humans do. A vest can help your dog stay afloat if he gets tired, or bites off more than he can chew.
